The top hotel brands in North America according to travelers have been revealed once more following a study that saw thousands of travelers take part. With travel costs rising and the travel process becoming an onerous chore with delays, cancellations and lost luggage aplenty, travelers are faced with headaches when it comes to deciding which hotels to spend their domestic staycations in – with leading hotel brands often proving to be a safe and popular choice for travelers in the current climate over new or lesser known options.
The findings, which were generated as a result of the J.D. Power 2022 North America Hotel Guest Satisfaction Index (NAGSI) Study, saw familiar names take the top spot once more, as well as revealing valuable insights into the state of the hotel industry at present. Here’s everything you need to know about the study into North America’s top hotel brands, including how it was carried out and which brands top the top spots this year.
Hotel Study – What Travelers Should Know
The study was completed by J.D. Power, a global leader in consumer insights, advisory services and data and analytics. According to their website, the J.D. Power 2022 North America Hotel Guest Satisfaction Index (NAGSI) Study “measures guest satisfaction with the entire hotel experience, from reservation to check-out, based on a recent guest stay”. This year’s study, which was the company’s 26th edition, was completed using the responses to more than 150 questions by some 34,000 respondents who stayed in hotels between May 2021 and May 2022.
The customer satisfaction survey saw the performances of more than 100 brands assessed by travelers across eight different market segments – luxury, upper upscale, upscale, upscale extended stay, upper midscale, upper midscale/midscale extended stay, midscale and economy. Each brand was assessed based on a 1000 point scale, making it easy for travelers to see which hotels were the top performers in each of the different market segments.
Hotel Study Results – Information For Travelers
The top performers in the luxury segment were Ritz-Carlton for the second year in a row, scoring an impressive 885 which put them narrowly ahead of Waldorf Astoria and the Four Seasons, who each had 881 points. Ritz-Carlton, which boasts 41 locations across the US, was also the highest performing hotel brand in the country. Also repeating past successes were Hard Rock Hotels, coming out top of the Upper Upscale segment for the second year in a row ahead of Canopy by Hilton and Wyndham Grand Hotels.
Despite missing out on the Upper Upscale Segment, Hilton topped the Upscale category through their Hilton Garden Inn brand, which narrowly pipped AC Hotels by Marriott and Delta Hotels to the top spot. Hyatt House came out on top of the Upscale Extended Stay market segment, whilst Drury Hotel took the crown in the Upper Midscale category for the 17th consecutive year. In the upper midscale/midscale extended stay segment, travelers’ responses saw Sonesta Simply Suites voted the top performing brand, ahead of other well-known brands such as Hilton and Marriott.
Wingate by Wyndham was voted as the best brand for midscale hotels, with their points total of 849 proving to be enough to see them finish ahead of Tru by Hilton and Best Western in second and third place respectively. Finally, in the economy hotel segment, it was WoodSpring Suites who travelers felt was the best performing hotel brand, with their score of 798 taking them comfortably above the segment average of 761.
This year’s study saw a general decline of levels of customer satisfaction. The top factor behind this was hotel costs and fees, with prices having risen without quality and value rising to match it. The study also revealed higher levels of dissatisfaction towards decor, furnishings and in-room amenities, with guests seemingly unimpressed after having been confined to their homes for large parts of the last few years. With this in mind, if travelers are looking for the perfect hotel for a domestic trip, these results show that the likes of Ritz-Carlton, Hard Rock, Hilton and Wyndham are their best bet at being satisfied and avoiding disappointment.
